Socceroos’ Tony Popovic Challenges World Cup Underdog Status, Unveils Squad Strategy
Socceroos coach Tony Popovic is confident his team can defy expectations and advance from a tough World Cup group, featuring Turkey, USA, and Paraguay. He is preparing an extended training camp in Florida, assembling players as their club seasons finish, and has offered a surprise call-up to injury-prone Qatar 2022 hero Mat Leckie.
Popovic emphasizes the importance of veteran experience for a World Cup campaign, citing the leadership and game-changing ability of players like Harry Souttar and Leckie. The team will play friendlies against Mexico and Switzerland before the final 26-player squad is confirmed on June 1st.
