Republic of Ireland Squad to Wear Black Armbands for Israel Game Amid Gaza Conflict Protests; One Player Withdraws
The Republic of Ireland’s football team will proceed with their Nations League game against Israel in Hungary, with players planning to wear black armbands “in recognition of all lives lost in the [Gaza] conflict.” Despite a strong majority vote within the squad to play, one player, goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, withdrew in protest, citing personal beliefs against the killing of innocent people.
FAI CEO David Courell confirmed the decision following extensive player discussions, while Israel FA’s Shlomi Barzel lauded the Irish team for agreeing to play, stating that “football has won” over political interference.
