Historic ‘Daylight’ Offside Goal Marks New Era in Canadian Premier League
A landmark moment occurred in the Canadian Premier League as Pacific FC’s Alejandro Diaz scored the first goal under the experimental “daylight” offside rule. This trial, supported by Fifa and advocated by Arsene Wenger, aims to reduce marginal offside calls and promote attacking play by requiring a clear gap between the attacker and the second-to-last defender.
The CPL is the first top-flight league to test this rule, with trial results to be presented to Ifab, potentially leading to a global law change by the 2027-28 European season.
