FIFA Launches Disciplinary Action Against Spain Over ‘Islamophobic and Xenophobic’ Chants at Egypt Friendly
FIFA has launched disciplinary proceedings against the Spanish Football Association (RFEF) over “Islamophobic and xenophobic” chants heard during a recent friendly match between Spain and Egypt in Barcelona. The chants, which were met with whistles despite stadium warnings, have been condemned as “intolerable” by Spain coach Luis de la Fuente and labelled a “repugnant act of racism” by the Egyptian FA. Spanish police are also investigating the incident, which occurred during a 0-0 draw that led to Spain losing its top world ranking.
